Volume is a tool for visualizing dialogue and sound effects through animated subtitles. Using machine-learning, it analyzes audio waveforms and displays expressive subtitles onscreen.

The goal is to push subtitles into a more comprehensive visual language - one that is easier to understand and gives more context for both hearing and non-hearing audiences. Hesitation, emphasis, sarcasm, humor, pacing - so much is lost in the process of subtitling. The personality of speech. We experimented with placement, timing, animation and font styling to convey as much contextual detail as possible.

Co-developed with Dylan Grossman. The project was shortlisted by the Sony Talent League.
